Packing for Portland, Maine — and a few songwriting thoughts

Just three weeks after starting Songwriting Scene, I’m packing for a weekend of gigs in Portland, Maine with my duo, Sweet Bitters. Over the past year, what with recording our CD and rehearsing our harmonies, neither my singing partner Nina Schmir nor I have written many new songs. In fact, when I told her that I had written my first new song in a while, which I presented at the most recent Manhattan Songwriters Circle gathering, her first words were, ” I have to catch up!” Apparently, a little competitive fire and creative energy can go a long way.

Just as I hope this blog is inspiring you thus far, it is inspiring me as well to start writing more again after a bit of a hiatus and to put more effort into taking risks and getting creative. I enjoy singing and recording and performing, but I haven’t been tapping into my songwriting skills lately as much as I’d like…so here’s to a fruitful songwriting season, this summer and beyond!

I find that a break or a lull in songwriting is a good thing. It's not that you haven't been busy, musically, just not writing. When you do sit down to write I think you'll find that there's a whole lot of things to write about! Write on.
