I'm not a songwriter, but for my other types of writing, having a solid block of time on the commuter rail is a real boon.

That, and having my email-enabled cell phone with me at all times, which allows me to send notes to myself (and to my twitter) easily. Later I will go thru these notes and status updates and turn them into decent pieces of writing.

Whenever I'm walking or driving or tossing and turning while NOT sleeping, I'm writing. I keep a piece of paper and a pen with me at all times and jot down lines, thoughts, overheard conversation.
