Do you have songwriting surprises?

I’ve been on a bit of a songwriting roll lately…I’m not entirely sure why. It could be because I’ve been feeling better physically over the past month, or because I was so inspired by our Wednesday-to-Wednesday Songwriting Challenge, or maybe it’s because spring is finally here? Either way, I’m not questioning it, just keeping my digital recorder at hand for when I’m noodling and thrilled when something that pleases my ear starts presenting itself.

It’s strange, though — I’ve suddenly been playing and singing in styles typically unfamiliar. Sure, there was that blues song I entered in the Challenge, but I’m also suddenly writing a country-tinged tune and another one that sounds fairly rootsy. It’s pretty far afield for a pop-folk-influenced gal like me. It could be all that Gillian Welch I’ve been listening to lately…but who knows? It’s an interesting songwriting surprise.

Does this kind of thing happen to you? Are you ever surprised by the kind of songs that begin to appear once you sit down and write, whether its lyrically, melodically, chordally or rhythmically?

When a song comes floating by just grab a hold and hang on for the ride. You never know where it’s gonna take you. And that’s half the fun.

Surprises DO present themselves – usually it’s lyrics that take the song someplace I never really planned to go. I love that – makes me feel like an artist instead of a crafter.
