Can Paul McCartney get his Beatles songs back?

by Sharon Goldman on August 12, 2009

Turns out Paul McCartney might not be out of song publishing luck after all. The publishing rights to most of the Beatles’ hits, according to an article in the UK’s The Guardian, will be eligible for “recapturing” beginning in 2018. There was not, as was rumoured, any provision in Michael Jackson’s will for giving the songs to Paul that he bought from ATV music in 1985.

I hope Paul gets his publishing mojo back!

It kind of breaks my heart to say so, but McCartney will have to stand in line with his cheque book. You can be sure that any number of investment funds will be trying to acquire the catalogue. Once created and signed, songs become a copyright and are transferrable assets (in addition to being the sundtrack to our lives). A acatalogue with a track record like this is very valuable due to its stability. Sheryl Crow just got $10 million on the back of (IMHO) 2 songs.

On the other hand, he stands to gain anyway. Someone that stumps up the $500 million or so will be trying hard to recoup! And McCartney is one half of the beneficiaries.
